History
Monterey County Housing, Inc. (MCHI) has a rich history of dedication and service to the community. Originally established as the Monterey County Association for Elderly Housing, Inc., MCHI began as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on addressing the housing needs of seniors. On September 5, 1989, the organization was formally incorporated, and its bylaws were adopted. By 1997, MCHI expanded its mission and was certified by the State of California as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO), reflecting a broader commitment to affordable housing for all.
To better represent this expanded vision, the organization officially changed its name to Monterey County Housing, Inc. on November 10, 1997. This shift marked a new chapter in MCHI’s legacy, emphasizing its role in developing housing solutions for individuals, families, seniors, and veterans. In 2001, the State of California encouraged MCHI to strengthen its expertise in housing development. By 2002, MCHI took a major step forward by appointing a full-time Executive Director, further solidifying its operational foundation.
MCHI has historically partnered with the Housing Authority of Monterey County (HACM) and continues to serve their Housing Choice Voucher Program.
Over the years, MCHI’s efforts have been recognized nationally for their innovation and effectiveness. The organization’s projects have received accolades from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials and the National Association of Local Housing Finance Agencies. These achievements reflect MCHI’s commitment to fostering stable and inclusive communities through thoughtful planning, collaboration, and execution.
Today, MCHI remains a vital force in Monterey County, continuing to create opportunities for affordable housing while supporting the diverse needs of the community.
